Organising the Resistance to Big Tech

We're a grassroots digital activist group that is fighting back against Big Tech.

We are an openly anti-capitalist group of citizens who are co-ordinating a strategic response against Big Tech - which we acknowledge as a symptom of late-stage capitalism.

We help to raise awareness of the problems with Big Tech and to highlight the obvious connections with capitalism, colonialism and imperialism.

There are many well documented issues with Big Tech:

  • NO PRIVACY

  • ANTI HUMAN RIGHTS

  • FUELS INEQUALITY

  • BUILT-IN ADDICTION

  • NO TRANSPARENCY

  • NO ACCOUNTABILITY

  • AVOIDS TAX

  • FUELS HATRED

  • FUELS CONSUMPTION

  • DAMAGING TO MENTAL HEALTH

  • TARGETS CHILDREN

  • DIGITAL COLONIALISM

  • SUPPORTS GENOCIDES

  • ALIGNED WITH AUTHORITIAN REGIMES

  • THREAT TO DEMOCRACY

  • MONOPOLISTIC

  • SURVEILLANCE CAPITALISM

  • We need to ditch Big Tech collectively - and prevent future tech from being used in abusive ways.
  • We need to apply pressure at the political level to heavily regulate and break up the Big Tech companies.
  • We need to apply pressure to the businesses that are proudly supporting Big Tech.
  • We need to adopt alternative, independent tech instead of supporting Big Tech.

No To Big Tech FAQ

Sometimes we get asked questions about our movement - here are a few common questions and answers.

No, we're not connected with the existing movement on Reddit. We are aware of it, and we are supportive of what they are also looking to achieve (and there are many such similar movements and communities out there, which is clearly a good thing!) but specifically regarding this subreddit, we disagree with their policy whereby they do not allow any political messages to be shared regarding Google on their subreddit.

For us this is very important - to DeGoogle clearly is a political decision! Everything is political and so to adopt a content policy that refuses to allow content relating to politics, for us is an oppressive policy.

Even if you don't consider yourself as political, or if you don't want to DeGoogle for political reasons... there's no avoiding the fact that to decide the products or services you chose to support is itself a very politically-motivated decision.

And finally - Reddit is very much a part of the Big Tech problem.

Whilst we do offer a limited amount of custom support for specific instances (see our Get Help page (external link)), we try to first suggest that those looking to DeGoogle spend time attending one of our webinars, or that they explore the resources and guidance we have referenced elsewhere on the website.

In some cases we will signpost you to other complimentary movements or groups who may be able to help your group to shift off Big Tech.

Nobody is funding us - we are made up of individual private contributors (currently funded by the founder), people who are passionate about pushing back against the rise of Big Tech having seen the negative impact upon society.

There is no commercial activity involved on this website. No affiliate links will be used, and no advertisements will be shown. This is a not-for-profit movement with the aim of supporting the ethical, alternative, privacy-first and opensource tech alternatives that exist (also known as FOSS).

Many of these companies require support (and money) in order to operate. They can't all survive from offering free services like Google do, because they aren't operating in a kind of vulture capitalist, walled garden environment.
Of course, some products we recommend are still free, and those do receive funding and private investment, or rely upon donations from any of their users.

Note that we will allow and encourage donations (external link) to cover the small costs involved in operating the website (and we have a transparency page (external link) that documents any such costs).

If you want to contribute some time to the movement, and are aligned with the values we have shared, please fill in the form on this contribute page (external link)

Once that is done, someone will be in touch to welcome you, and to share next steps. We like to meet online with all contributors - because it's nice to chat about this stuff face-to-face - so that may also be arranged when we reach out.

You will be invited to join us in Matrix/Element where we communicate internally too.
